WHAT IS A GMO, AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
These are the questions conscious consumers should be asking themselves. Would you eat something again, knowing it could potentially harm you and your body?
GMO STANDS FOR GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM
It is a plant/animal that has been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses, and other plants and animals. This type of artificial manipulation does not occur inherently in nature but is created in a laboratory. GMO’s have been around since the 90’s with the first GMO hitting grocery stores in 1994.
Leading Biotech companies like Monsanto promise an array of benefits linked to GMO’s, but they don’t hold any truth. Monsanto claims GM crops can help protect our resources and, ultimately make a balanced meal more accessible to everyone. In reality NO GMO’s currently on the market offer increased yields, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefits.
An evidence-based examination published by the non-GMO project “GMO myths and truths” states “Conventional plant breeding, in some cases helped by safe modern technologies like gene mapping and marker assisted selection, continues to outperform GM in producing high-yield, drought-tolerant, and pest- and disease-resistant crops that can meet our present and future food needs.”
MONSANTO TENDS TO MAKE OUTRAGEOUS CLAIMS
They state their Golden rice, genetically modified to contain vitamin A, can help an estimated 2.7 million children suffering from vitamin A deficiency, which causes blindness and can lead to death. What they forget to embrace is research now shows GMO’s are linked to an array of health problems. We’ve now learned that animals fed GMO corn had several liver disorders and reproductive problems. Also, certain ingredients that are linked to GMO’s in the form of pesticides can cause gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, and cancer.
More and more research is currently being conducted, as the FDA still supports Monsanto’s efforts with little to no safety assessments of GMO crops. Then again we are all aware of the lack of responsibility the FDA has in the health of our nation. More than 60 countries around the world have already banned GMO’s or are at least placing significant restrictions on their supply.
OVER 80% OF PROCESSED FOODS CONTAIN A GMO INGREDIENT
Currently there are 8 commercially available GMO Crops. This list includes Corn, Soybeans, Cotton, alfalfa, sugar beets, canola, papaya, and squash. To be absolutely sure you are not subjecting yourself to GMO’s I encourage you to purchase Organic. There is an arrangement of foods you will need to immediately remove from your diet and your cupboard. I can only assure you removing these foods will leave you happier and healthier, not only now, but in the future.
